Immorality makes crisis even worse

I want to thank Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy for their strong leadership and action during this pandemic. The public needs them to continue to make decisions based on science and the recommendations of epidemiologists, the experts who have previously been shunned by the White House for speaking the truth.

Given the lies and false information that have been spread hourly by tweets and unhinged briefings, President Donald Trump is making it worse, increasing by day the number of people who will be sicken and die from this virus. I am a retired registered nurse and a volunteer with the Albany County Medical Reserve Corps. We have been asked to help with the COVID-19 response.

Before I began volunteering at the Department of Health, I was worried — now I am truly frightened. Charts, graphs and speeches in the media of the numbers of people affected by COVID-19 is revealing, but seeing the numbers of people living right here in Albany County under precautionary quarantine is staggering. Speaking to them is heartbreaking, they are afraid.

Maybe the president and his misguided advisers’ consciousness would “ping” if they visited a local health department. However, I don’t think that would influence this lack of morality and leadership. We need to vote them out in November.
