ELECTION DIRECTION 2020

Progressive Schenectady Send Letters to Maine College Students (for MA & ME Volunteers)

  • Event Date: 09/10/2020
  • Event Time: 7pm – 8pm
  • Event Location: Virtual
  • Event Description:

#### Students Are Expected to Vote in Record Numbers! Let’s help Maine Students Lead the Way!

Students are a great source of new voters in Maine. You will make it simple, easy and safe for 4200 students at Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) to register and vote in the November 3 election.

SMCC will give us official school envelopes addressed to these students. Volunteers will pick up the envelopes from convenient locations ***in Maine and Massachusetts (See list below)*** and fill them with all the forms students need to register to vote and request an absentee ballot.

Volunteers will be asked to: pick up and process packets of 20 envelopes addressed to students; provide 20 additional envelopes, 40 stamps (at a cost of $22); and have the ability to print a 6-page PDF DOUBLE-SIDED. If you don’t have the ability to print double-sided, you will NOT BE ABLE to do this project.

***Please sign up – in the box on the upper right hand side of this page.***

***NOTE: TO COMPLETE YOUR REGISTRATION YOU WILL NEED TO FILL OUT A SIMPLE GOOGLE FORM. The link to that form will be sent to you immediately after you sign up. ***

***We will have a kickoff Zoom party on Thursday, September 10 at 7 PM to review the project and help you all get started.***

If you feel that you don’t need instruction, no need to come to the Zoom party. You will receive detailed written instructions and may complete the project at a time that is most convenient to you as long as all envelopes are mailed by Thursday, September 17.

***Pick up locations currently include:***

***Maine:*** Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland Foreside, Gray, Wiscasset,(and possibly Bangor.)

***Massachusetts:*** Cambridge (near Harvard Sq), Lexington (Near intersection Rt 95 & Rt 2), Swampscott, Brookline (near Coolidge Corner), (and possibly Great Barrington.)

Additional locations may be added based on demand.

If you have any questions, please contact one of our Project Managers at CoolMainers@gmail.com.

Note from the organizer:

How to prepare:
***A HUGE thank you for volunteering for this important project!***

Get your favorite pen ready and join us to send letters to SMCC students. Since we cannot do registration in person and most students are not on campus, this is our best chance to sign up as many students as possible.

Please read to the end of this email to be sure that you understand and can complete the project.

***IMPORTANT: Once you read the entire email, you will need to complete your registration by filling out a simple Google form at https://forms.gle/Z62saBtoFtZWZdBm9 *** This form will allow you to choose a place convenient for you to pick up official SMCC envelopes needed for the project. See list of locations below.

Please join us at our ***Zoom Letters to SMCC Students Kickoff Party
on Thursday, September 10, 2020 07:00 PM Eastern Time*** (US and Canada) where we will review instructions and do a walk thru of how the project will work.

If you can’t make it to the Zoom party, don’t worry. You will receive an email including Step-By-Step Instructions and all Voter Material by September 10 and can then do the project at your own convenience as long as you send the letters by Thursday, September 17th.

For all volunteers, your first step in this project will be to pick up one or more packets of 20 SMCC envelopes addressed to students. They will be available at convenient locations in Maine or Massachusetts. The envelopes are scheduled to be available on Thursday, September 10th. (***We will notify you if the date changes.***)

You will print 20 copies of a 6-page DOUBLE-SIDED Voter Material document (printing out to 3-pages) to send to the students. Printing double-sided is not that hard, but ***if you do not have the ability to print double-sided you will NOT BE ABLE to do this project.*** If you don’t have a printer that prints double-sided, you might want to ask a friend or consider using a copy shop to print them.

In addition, you will be asked to supply 20 envelopes and 40 stamps (at a cost of $22). The stamps are to go on the official SMCC envelopes addressed to each student and a second envelope that you will supply, stamp and address to each student’s municipal clerk. You will stuff the official SMCC envelopes with the appropriate forms printed out from the Voter Material plus the additional envelope.

Mail the letters and voilà, you will have enabled 20 new students to be added to the ranks of faithful voters!
